D. Luís I Bridge...

The D. Luís I bridge, as it is popularly known, is the most iconic bridge in Porto, being located in the historical heart of the city - the Ribeira.

A piece of History...

It consists in a metal arch bridge, designed by Eng. Teófilo Seyrig (partner of Gustave Eiffel). The Teófilo Seyrig's draft was chosen after several other projects were rejected to not comtemplate the needs of a connection between Porto and Gaia*. 

Thus, its construction was begun in 1881; at 31st October of 1886 was opened the upper deck; and in 1888 was finally inaugurated with the opening of the lower deck and fully functioning.

"Legend says..." the king D. Luís I missed the bridge inauguration, and as a demonstration of dissatisfaction of the people from Porto, the bridge was named "Luís I Bridge" or "Luiz I", without Dom.

"Lgend says(two)..." despite the name of the bridge to be Luís I Bridge, this is popularly known as D. Luís bridge due to the great warmth to the people between Porto's habitants and the king Luís I.

Nowadays, the upper deck serves as a passageway to the Porto's subway on it's yellow line (D) that connect Porto to Gaia*. The lower deck serves as a road. Both trays allow for pedestrian crossing, which are essential!  The paths offer us privileged views of the city of Porto, the Douro river and their union. I have to confess that the view from Morro's garden (first subway stop at Gaia's side) is one of my favorites and I always take there all my friends who visit Porto through me.

Ponte Luís I

Ponte D. Luís I...

A Ponte D. Luís I, como é popularmente conhecida, é a ponte mais emblemática da cidade do Porto, estando localizada no coração histórico da cidade - a Ribeira.

Um pouco de História...

Trata-se de uma ponte em arco, projectada pelo Eng. Teófilo Seyrig (sócio de Gustave Eiffel). O projecto de Teófilo Seyrig foi escolhido depois de vários outros projectos terem sido rejeitados por não atenderem às necessidades de uma ligação entre Porto e Gaia. 

Assim, a sua construção foi iniciada em 1881; a 31 de Outubro de 1886 foi aberto o tabuleiro superior; e em 1888 foi finalmente inaugurada com a abertura do tabuleiro inferior e total funcionamento.

"Reza a lenda..." que o rei D. Luís I faltou à inauguração da ponte, e como demonstração da insatisfação do povo portuense, a ponte foi denominada de "Ponte Luís I" ou "Luiz I", sem o Dom.

"Reza a (outra) lenda..." que apesar do nome da ponte ser Ponte Luís I, esta é popularmente conhecida como Ponte Dom Luís devido à grande afectuosidade entre o povo portuense e o rei Luís I.

Hoje, o tabuleiro superior serve de via de passagem ao Metro do Porto na sua linha amarela (D) que une Porto a Gaia. O tabuleiro inferior serve de via rodoviária. Ambos os tabuleiros permitem a travessia pedestre  sendo estes dois percursos imprescindíveis!  Os percursos oferecem-nos vistas privilegiadas da cidade do Porto, do rio Douro, bem como da união de ambos. Confesso que a vista do Jardim do Morro (primeira paragem de metro do lado de Gaia) é uma das minhas favoritas e levo lá todos os amigos que vêm visitar o Porto através de mim.

City of Porto...

"Porto is the city where I live. This small city is, for me, rich in warmth, color, life and stories, and with a touch of mystery that binds us to it and makes us fall in love. As a good romance needs mystery and a foggy day to inspire the drama, also this city gives the perfect scenario for us to dream and to travel on the momentum given by the architecture, by the weather, by the people with whom we exchanged glances on the street (and that surprising smile that sweeps us away...), by the music we listen inside of us when we walk the streets of Invicta*. This is the scene of our stories and to it we deliver our hearts and hope for our happy ending..."

Here I pretend to show you the nooks and crannies of that amazing city through "my eyes". I admit that I also want to find out more about Porto that I already know... much more!

*Invicta is another name for Porto, the city.

Apresentação

Cidade do Porto...    

  "O Porto é a cidade onde vivo. Esta pequena cidade é para mim rica em cor e calor, rica em vida e histórias e com um toque de mistério que nos prende a ela e nos apaixona. Da mesma forma que um bom romance necessita de mistério e de um dia de neblina para dar asas ao drama, também esta cidade nos fornece o cenário ideal para sonharmos e viajarmos no embalo cedido pela arquitectura,  pelo clima, pelas pessoas com quem trocamos olhares na rua (e aquele sorriso surpreendente que nos arrebata...), pela música que ouvimos dentro de nós quando pisamos as ruas da Invicta. Esta é o palco das minhas e das vossas histórias e a ela entregamos os nossos corações e esperamos pelo nosso final feliz..."

Aqui pretendo apresentar-vos os cantos e recantos desta magnifica cidade através dos meus olhos. Confesso que com isso espero também eu, conhecer mais do que já conheço, aliás... Muito mais!
